As OhioHealth has grown as a system, we remain committed to trauma care in the communities we serve. Trauma and acute care is such an important part of what we do – serving patients at a critical, vulnerable, time in their lives. That is why we have created a new system role to lead our trauma and acute care surgery across OhioHealth.

Michael (Shay) O’Mara, MD, MBA, FACS will lead that effort as system chief, trauma and acute care surgery for OhioHealth with oversight of trauma and acute care surgery for the OhioHealth system. Dr. O’Mara will continue to serve in his current role as medical director, trauma services, for OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and as a trauma surgeon at Grant and OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He will soon receive privileges and participate at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital to help better support their program.

Under Dr. O’Mara’s leadership at Grant, the hospital was re-verified as a Level I Trauma Center in 2015. Grant Level I Trauma is the busiest trauma center in the state with a national reputation of excellence. During Dr. O’Mara’s time as medical director there, the program has experienced expansive growth, with trauma patients now coming from 55 Ohio counties.

Dr. O’Mara has been with OhioHealth since 2012. He came to Columbus from Sutter Medical Center and the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, where he held several roles including chief, general surgery and medical director, acute care surgery. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa.

Congratulations to Dr. O’Mara.
