OhioHealth Grant Medical Center Trauma Program Update

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center Trauma Program Update
Expansion complete and transitions planned in support of OhioHealth system trauma program

In living our mission to improve the health of those we serve, OhioHealth has a long-standing commitment to trauma care in the communities we serve across the region. Trauma and acute care is such an important part of what we do — serving patients at the most critical, vulnerable, time in their lives.

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center is the busiest Level I Trauma Center in the state, which means we’re playing an even greater role in ensuring life-saving treatment is available when it is needed most. Over the past 10 years, the program has seen 86 percent growth and continues to grow. To support this growth, OhioHealth has invested $5.7 million in the trauma program at Grant — expanding services and capabilities and building on our expertise.

We are proud of this work, but most importantly, we are proud of how this work will allow us to better support the patients and communities we serve. With the completion of the helipad on Tuesday, August 15, the trauma program at Grant now has:

+       Increased the number of trauma bays from two to three — constructing a new bay and improving the two current bays.

+       Constructed a new helipad, capable of dual landings and accommodating larger helicopters.

+       Replaced radiology equipment and added a new X-ray room in the Emergency Department.

+       Renovated our EMS break room, providing a larger, improved space for EMS.

As we continue to advance our vision for a system-wide trauma program, Shay O’Mara, MD, MBA, FACS, has been serving as both system chief, trauma and acute care surgery for OhioHealth and medical director of trauma services at Grant. To support this transition, Matthew Moorman, MD, FACS, FCCP, will become the new medical director of trauma services at Grant, effective March 1, 2018.

However, Dr. Moorman will begin supporting many of his duties and responsibilities as medical director of trauma services now, allowing for a smooth transition as he and Dr. O’Mara work together to support the trauma team, as well as the 2018 Trauma Re-verification Process at Grant.

Dr. Moorman is currently the associate director of trauma services and a trauma surgeon at Grant with more than 10 years of experience. He will be responsible for ensuring the clinical coverage and quality care for trauma, surgical critical care and acute care surgery patient activities and will ensure compliance with the American College of Surgeons Guidelines for Level I Re-verification.

Dr. Moorman has been with OhioHealth since 2016. He came to Columbus from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was the trauma medical director at Hillcrest Hospital and the director of the division of acute care surgery. He has also served in the United States Air Force and the Ohio Air National Guard. Dr. Moorman has been on countless committees proving his leadership and community involvement.

We are excited that these new milestones will help us continue to serve our patients for years to come, allowing us to accommodate more critical patients when seconds and minutes count.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the trauma program at Grant.

Sincerely,

Michael Lawson
President, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center
